We are always looking for dedicated volunteers!
Volunteers are the backbone of CART and are essential to our program’s success and, unlike other therapeutic riding centers, our volunteers are involved in every aspect of the program — not just lessons!
What does a CART volunteer do?
Horse Leader
Leads the horse while maintaining speed, direction, and pace, during the lesson
Executes directions from instructor and maintains clear communication with side walkers
Leads horse in and out of the barn or arena
Sidewalker
Prepares rider for lesson and aids in mounting and dismounting
Spots rider on either side of the horse at a walk and/or trot
Positively reinforces instruction throughout the lesson
Encourages and emotionally supports rider
Volunteers also gain experience in:
General horse (or donkey!) care - grooming, tacking, feeding, etc.
Barn chores - picking stalls, cleaning equipment, etc.
Fundraisers, events, and other special projects or activities
Marketing and social media
Volunteers must be at least 14 years old. You must have transportation and the ability to commit to consecutive days of a session (8wk/6wk sessions).
Experience working with horses or with special needs individuals is preferred, but not required. We are more than happy to teach necessary skills as needed and every volunteer will receive an orientation session prior to starting.
Attire:
Shirts with sleeves (no tank tops), long pants and close-toed shoes are mandatory. Hard-soled shoes such as hiking or paddock boots are highly recommended.
