Ride with CART!

The CART approach is to have fun while encouraging our riders to try new and challenging exercises on horseback! Our lessons are flexible and rider-centered which means that we work with the needs, interests, and abilities, of our riders. We integrate play with purposeful activities aimed at promoting new skills and behaviors while identifying and reinforcing underlying skills.

Sessions are conducted during the spring, summer, and fall, of each year. Sessions range from 30 minutes to 1 hour long. All of our therapeutic riding sessions are given by a Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship (PATH) certified instructor.

Pricing:

  • $300 for the 8-week spring or fall session

  • $210 for the 6-week summer session

Payment is expected by the first day of the session. Please contact us about scholarship opportunities!

Location: The CART Barn is located near 5924 Fried Farm Road, Crozet, Virginia.

Lessons

During lessons, each rider will be assigned one to three volunteers (as needed) with three or four riders participating in each class. We typically hold lessons in our outdoor arena but an indoor arena is available when needed.

Activities during lessons

Activities and exercises include call and response, color, letter, and shape recognition and recall, stretching/reaching, accuracy and precision practice, directional maneuvering, and many others.

These activities are paired with various obstacle courses and games that improve and develop faculties such as communication, attention, memory, problem solving, gross and fine motor control, sensory processing, confidence, independence, and patience — all while providing achievable short and long term goals.

Required attire

Please dress comfortably. To minimize distractions during the lesson, we ask that riders arrive wearing appropriate attire. Long pants are mandatory. Close-toed shoes are required and hard-sole shoes such as boots are recommended. Riding helmets are provided but you are welcome to bring your own pre-approved helmet. We also provide sunscreen and bug spray. There is a bathroom on site.
